RANKA BG MOVIE EDITION ☑

Ranka was that young girl who gave off a simple feeling. She was, at the start, just a young girl who greatly admired the songstress Sheryl Nome with a crush on Alto Saotome. She had a simple part-time job and lived with her adoptive brother. She lived her life on the colonization fleet of Frontier and never really expected more from her life outside that.

That all changed when the Vajra, an bio-mechanical alien race, attacked during Sheryl's first live concert on Frontier. After witnessing her brother get hurt in the battle as he was a pilot in the fight, Ranka had an attack. It's revealed that Ranka has dissociative amnesia which stems from a past traumatic experience in which she witnessed the death of her family. Ranka had come to realize that life was short and after speaking to Alto she admits her wish of becoming a singer. While singing the song, Aimo, to Alto which is her only memory of her childhood they encounter Sheryl who had started singing along with the song as well. Before they can get an answer as to why Sheryl also knows the song it's cut abruptly when Sheryl leaves because of work.

From this point on, Ranka puts an effort into becoming a singer against her brother's wishes. Even going as far as entering a pageant which got her kicked out of school. She then spends the day roaming around with Michael, a friend and her brother's subordinate (after he had been ordered to find Ranka by her brother), following her. When they reach a mall and they end up talking even more, Micheal ends up pointing out Ranka's selfishness for not understanding her brother's feelings as well. He then challenges her to sing in the mall to see if she can sing even when no one is there to solely listen to her song. At first unsure about it, Ranka is able to prove how serious she is about becoming a singer when she looks in the sky and is reminded of Alto and his encouragement which results in her starting to sing. Having proven herself they stop to talk after her singing performance and Ranka comments to Micheal that it was thanks to Alto that she was able to sing. Which, speak of the devil, had happened to be in the same mall as them at the same time— with Sheryl. After having witnessed Sheryl kiss Alto on the cheek it leaves Ranka in shock and Alto as well he realizes she had seen. There isn't time for any misunderstandings to be cleared, though, when Ranka is approached by a man who offers her a chance to debut as a singer after having heard her performance earlier.

She gladly takes the offer. And, with her new manager, even manages to convince her brother to let her do it.

After trial and error, doing silly small time jobs, Ranka is eventually able to work hard enough to the point where one of the commercial she's done might be broadcasted on the whole ship if it does well. For the first time ever since she had last encountered him in the mall she speaks to Alto and thanks him for his support which helped her reach where she is now. She also asks him about Sheryl and what he thinks of her to which her tells her that Sheryl is a pro. Someone who acts haughty, with a childish side, but also someone who can amaze the audience with her performance. Ranka says in reply that Alto is the same since he's the prodigy Kabuki actor. Alto, though, disagrees saying that he was just raised to be that way by his dad and he ended up hating it. Ranka feels like despite them being so close right now that Alto feel far away from her. Alto then says that his previous work as a Kabuki actor actually scared him as when he got into the role it almost felt like he would lose himself in it and wouldn't be himself anymore. In reply to this, Ranka says that no matter what time or what place that he'll always be himself.

One day, while on the way home from work, Ranka runs into a small creature. She isn't sure what it is but she takes it in thinking that it didn't have a family and names it Ai-kun. While singing to herself, Ranka worries about her mini street concert that she'll be singing for the next day and wonders how she can dance more femininely. After Ai-kun attempts to comfort her she gets the idea to ask Alto for help but then promptly remembers the time at the mall when she saw him together with Sheryl. She ends up leaving the house on her own, bringing Ai-kun along, and goes to the hill where she usually sang alone before. There she runs into Sheryl who she talks to about the mini concert and then is told by Sheryl that nothing happened between her and Alto. Sheryl had just brought him along so that she could play. Sheryl then gives Ranka tickets to her final concert and tells her to come and bring Alto along too.

After which, Sheryl starts singing Aimo and Ranka joins in as well. When there's suddenly a glow coming from Ai-kun, Sheryl says it's because Ranka's song resonated with him. Ranka doesn't understand and Sheryl goes even further to say that Ranka had been a survivor too, hadn't she? Of Gallia. But Ranka just ends up confused and replies that she doesn't have any memories of her childhood which leaves Sheryl shocked. Ai-kun hops away in the midst of this conversation which in response both Ranka and Sheryl chase after him. Eventually, Alto arrives on scene and when he sees Sheryl chasing after Ranka, he confuses the situation and mistakes it for Sheryl attacking Ranka. Why? Because earlier he had been warned by Ranka's brother that Sheryl might be a spy who had come to kidnap Ranka who had been the sole survivor of Gallia IV.

With this, Ranka is put under house arrest by her brother to not get any further involved with Sheryl. However, Ranka sneaks out of the house to go attend Sheryl's concert. There she sees that Alto's seat is empty and wonders about it but is then called by her brother to tell her that he has work— This meant that the S.M.S had been dispatched for a fight and that meant Alto was also there in the battle. When she hears Sheryl singing and realizes that Sheryl also knows about the S.M.S fighting, Ranka also starts to sing but the concert is put to a stop when the Vajra end up attacking the Frontier once again.

In the midst of the battle, Ranka has flashbacks to her childhood where she realizes that the Vajra came to take her. Thinking that everyone would die if she didn't do something, Ranka uses herself as a bait and is taken by the Vajra. She continues to sing, though, after hearing Sheryl's still singing as well as a representative of hope. She is then soon saved by Alto and then joins Sheryl on stage to sing. Through their efforts eventually the fight is won and the Vajra threat is pushed back.

By the end of the first movie, Ranka has matured and even stops herself midway from bothering her brother when she sees him after the battle.

"I'm not a child anymore."

By the second and final movie, Ranka's stardom is on the rise due the battle in the previous movie. Having song along with Sheryl to show that there's still hope even in war, Ranka become known as the, "Superdimensional Cinderella", a symbol for hope.

With Sheryl still being charged as a spy and her having hired the S.M.S until the suspicions against her are cleared and the Vajra threat still there, they hardly have any time to rest. After inviting Sheryl to her first live concert, Ranka takes a chance to ask Alto if they could meet and talk since the S.M.S are having a trip on the same day she has an off day.

In the talk she tells him that she thinks that the Vajra have souls and feelings. When she had been taken by the Vajra she says that although she should have been afraid it actually felt like she was being welcomed home. A nostalgic feeling. Alto snaps at her though and says that it's impossible for the Vajra to have feelings since why else would they attack them for then? He then says that no matter what he'll protect her.

During her first concert the S.M.S go to attack the Vajra's nest directly and during this time Ranka experiences an extreme amount of pain in her stomach during the end of the battle. After that, Alto is hospitalized due to severe injuries from the battle and upon learning this Ranka rushes off to be by his side. But, unfortunately for her, she's late as when she arrives on there she finds him together with Sheryl. She attempts to run off after witnessing them together but ends up tripping and when Alto goes to try and help her that's when the Frontier officials arrive.

They came to put Sheryl under arrest for espionage. As it turns out, Sheryl had been the cause behind the Vajra attacks. With the a fold quartz, which are minerals harvested by the Vajra, it has a connection to the Vajra's hivemind. Sheryl had used it to amplify her singing which lead the Vajra to the Frontier fleet.

With her arrest and her charge as a spy under war times she is ultimately given the death sentence without trial. After seeing Alto sad during all this and gathering her courage, Ranka goes to visit Sheryl at Alcatraz jails and expresses her disappointment in Sheryl. Not over the espionage but over how Sheryl was acting weak. She had looked up to Sheryl for her courage despite how sad and alone she can be and when they sang together, she felt as if she wasn't alone. She then says that she only wants to ask one thing of Sheryl and asks how Sheryl feels about Alto. In response, Sheryl admits her feelings for Alto but then says that it'll be a secret between the two of them since she's going to die soon after all.

After this visit, Ranka runs into Brera Sterne, one of Sheryl's bodyguard's that currently on the run from the Frontier officials. There he tells her that the Frontier are trying to subdue the Vajra and use their resources— Including taking over their planet. He tells her that they plan to use her singing as a weapon against the Vajra since she's the only other person besides Sheryl who can communicate with the Vajra. Ranka was exposed to the V-type Infection, a disease from the Vajra's fold microbes, when her mother was pregnant with her which makes her immune to the microbes. This makes her capable of controlling the Vajra.

And then he tells her that he's her real older brother. Her songs are only effective when she wants them to be and that's why he wanted to wait for her to remember on her own. He then says that while he was dying after Gallia IV the Vajra attack that the Galaxy fleet had saved him.

This whole time he's been waiting and believing that they would meet again.

Before they could speak more, Brera is attacked by the Frontier military and makes his escape.

Ranka goes to the S.M.S and reaccounts what had occured between her and Brera. There they learn that what Brera had said was true after scanning Ranka's body and finding fold microbes in her intestine. So, there they realize that the Vajra hadn't been trying to attack the Frontier, they had simply wanted "rescue" Ranka who they had mistaken as for their own kind due the fold waves her song produced. Through deduction they realize that the Vajra are an alien race with feelings after all. And Luca, another one of Alto and Ranka's friends in the S.M.S, was also able to confirm that Mishima, the President's aide, is manipulating the government and the President by taking over Galaxy's plan to use the Vajra. Which goes against the Act of not hurting other living creatures that can feel in the universe.

The S.M.S decide to take matters in their own hands in a rebellion against the Frontier government. They plan to break Sheryl out of jail also saying that she still owes them money, after all. Ranka offers to stage a concert on Alcatraz as a distraction for their plan.

After saving Sheryl, they talk and Sheryl says that her grandmother was a Vajra research who searched for the soul in all things. A singer that can reach out to these things with the wind. Someone like Ranka. Sheryl's grandmother thought that if someone could use their song to reach the wind then it would be possible to communicate with the Vajra. But the plan ended in failure when the Vajra attacked the research fleet. But Ranka corrects Sheryl and says that she remembers everything now. Even at that time the Vajra didn't attack Ranka and they had simply been trying to "rescue" her as they believed her to be their own "kind."

Brera appears congratulating Ranka for remembering everything. He tells her that he came for her to end the war between them and the war with the Vajra. But, Sheryl stops her and tells her that that man isn't her brother any longer. The Galaxy fleet turned him into a puppet to trick Ranka. Brera shows his true colors and comments on how Sheryl was betraying the Galaxy. Their motives including killing Ranka and transplanting her organs into Sheryl so that Sheryl could have her fold microbe immunity.

Alto attempts to stop Brera but Brera easily fends him off and is about to take Ranka when Ozma comes in and stops him. They run away after Ozma leaves Alto to protect Ranka and Sheryl but Brera still makes chase after them with Ozma following to stop him.

When Brera catches up them Ozma uses himself as a shield to stop Brera's attacks. During this time, Ranka passes out but n the midst of the battle between the two there's an explosion which creates a huge hole sucking out into space in the area they are in. Ranka and Sheryl are about to be sucked into space when Sheryl sacrifices herself to save Ranka by tossing her to Alto before being sucked out into space.

And, now, this leads up to the final battle. With Alto's new resolve to end things despite the sacrifices that have been made, they'll put an end to the war.

In the Final battle, they plan to use Ranka's song to communicate with the Vajra. Before the battle she approaches Alto and confesses her feelings to him but before he could answer her she stops him. Rather than being afraid of singing in the midst of a battle she is more afraid of hearing his answer. She fears that if she hears what he has to say that she'll be unable to continue singing. So all she asks of him is to come back alive.

During the battle, Ranka's song is unable to reach the Vajra as they have implants in them that controls their actions. After realizing this, Alto tries to tell the others but is then shot. This puts Ranka into shock and she stops singing.

During his fall, he reunites with Sheryl and Ozma who had been saved by Ai-kun, who was a Vajra lava. Sheryl, despite how singing could ruin her health even more, sings and rejoins with Ranka as they sing together.

Alto goes to attempt to communicate to the Vajra Queen and ends up fighting with Brera once more. Brera who comes to his senses on his own, rips off his own implant and destroys the Galaxy mass communication that had merged with the Vajra Queen. Alto, Sheryl, and Ranka having been able to communicate their feelings to the Vajra and Alto answers the two's feelings. He rejects Ranka and is about to admit his feelings to Sheryl but is unable to when he disappears with the Vajra Queen.

A month later everyone is now living on the Vajra planet with the Vajra leaving and entrusting their plane to them. Sheryl is in a coma after using her final life force to sing in the battle. Ranka understands the Vajra's feelings and says that one day if they can continue to protect this planet then one day the Vajra and people can coexist. She also believes that one day Sheryl will wake up and that Alto will definitely return.
